Pokémon and Halo lawyer criticizes anti-woke gamers, claiming his role was to eliminate them

The video game industry has recently seen a wave of layoffs despite strong sales and multi-billion dollar mergers. Amidst discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the industry, a former lawyer and producer expressed frustration about his role in purging certain individuals. Fans of popular franchises have criticized the adoption of divisive identity politics in movies, series, and video games, attributing it to DEI consulting companies that influence storytelling. One such agency, Sweet Baby Inc. (SBI), has faced controversy for allegedly promoting diversity politics in video games. Over 250,000 gamers on Steam follow a list called “Sweet Baby Inc. Detected” to avoid supporting content associated with the agency.

Don McGowan, a former chief legal officer of The Pokémon Company and producer of “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu,” as well as a producer for Bungie, shared his views on the industry. He criticized anti-woke consumers and defended DEI consultancy companies like Sweet Baby Inc. He argued that those who oppose DEI messaging in games are not welcomed in the industry. McGowan emphasized the importance of removing toxic individuals from the gaming environment, stating that trust and safety departments exist for that purpose. He faced backlash for his comments and later made his social media account private.

The clash between consumers and the industry over identity politics in entertainment has been ongoing. McGowan’s remarks sparked debate and controversy within the gaming community. Despite the backlash, he stood by his statements and defended his position. The impact of DEI on the video game industry continues to be a topic of discussion among industry professionals and gamers alike.
