New Google Messages feature: Custom Bubbles with RCS backgrounds now available to select users

Google Messages has introduced a new feature called Custom Bubbles, which allows users to theme the color and background of their RCS chats. This feature is exclusive to RCS chats and does not apply to SMS conversations. Once the feature is rolled out to your device, you can access it by selecting “Change colors” from the Google Messages overflow menu or from the contact Details section.

Custom Bubbles offers nine different theme options, including Default (Material You Dynamic Color), Blue, Turquoise, Purple, Green, Orange, Fuchsia, Pink, and Monochrome. The chosen theme will apply to most elements on the screen, such as message bubbles, but not the text field or voice recorder button. The Details page will maintain the Dynamic Color theming.

The Custom Bubbles feature is more noticeable when the system Dark theme is disabled. The RCS background, which features bubble patterns, becomes more apparent in this setting. Despite the customization options, the feature does not feel intrusive and blends well with the overall app design.

It is worth noting that Custom Bubbles is currently only available for RCS chats and not SMS conversations. The feature is gradually rolling out, with the latest Google Messages beta version showcasing the new functionality. If you set a theme for your conversation and the other person does not have Custom Bubbles enabled, they will not see any changes on their end.

In the future, Custom Bubbles will be synced on a per-conversation basis, allowing users to personalize their chat experience further. Whether using the light theme or dark theme, Custom Bubbles offer a unique way to customize your RCS chats in Google Messages.
