Discord is expanding its chat platform to include a wider variety of games and apps

Discord recently announced the launch of a new Embedded App SDK for developers, set to roll out on March 18. This SDK allows developers to embed apps and games directly within Discord chats using an iframe. Previously, only select developers had access to these tools, but now the floodgates are open for a wider range of shared experiences to be created.

In addition to the SDK, Discord is reviving its app pitches program, where developers can pitch app ideas and potentially receive up to $30,000 in funding. Last year, Discord funded various projects including a coral reef cam, a city-building sim, and an art portfolio app. The company is excited to see what innovative ideas developers will come up with in 2024.

Discord is also experimenting with technology that will allow users to add apps to their accounts, enabling these experiences to follow them across different servers. A beta version of this feature will launch alongside the SDK on March 18, with apps appearing in DMs, group chats, and small servers.

These updates come on the heels of a recent round of layoffs at Discord, where 17 percent of the workforce was impacted. CEO Jason Citron stated that these cuts were necessary to ensure the company’s continued growth and profitability. Discord has also introduced a partnership program with game developers to sell themed avatars and profile effects.

In other news, the European Parliament has passed the AI Act to regulate AI use in the European Union, banning certain applications and imposing new rules on companies like OpenAI and Google. YouTube is rolling out a redesigned app for TVs with a focus on shopping and comments. Sony has announced free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers, including Resident Evil 3, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, and NBA 2K24.

Sony is also releasing a new PlayStation 5 system update, improving controller sound quality and screen sharing. Samsung’s Galaxy Tab S9 is on sale for $680, a record low price. Tesla and other companies have paid their top executives more than federal income tax over five years. Google DeepMind has developed an AI system for 3D games, and Amazon is offering a discount on Garmin’s Forerunner 55 GPS running watch.
