Sam Darnold signs one-year contract with Vikings

Following the departure of Kirk Cousins, the Vikings wasted no time in securing a new veteran quarterback. Reports indicate that Minnesota has reached an agreement with Sam Darnold on a one-year contract valued at $10 million. Darnold, the third overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, served as the backup quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers during the 2023 season. Despite only starting one game, he made an impact by completing 16-of-26 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 19 yards and a TD.

Prior to his stint with the 49ers, Darnold spent his first three seasons with the New York Jets before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2021. He posted a 4-7 record as a starter in 2021, but improved to 4-2 with Carolina in 2022. Throughout his career, Darnold has accumulated a 21-35 record as a starter, completing 59.7% of his passes for 12,064 yards, 63 touchdowns, and 56 interceptions. He has also fumbled 38 times, losing 14 of them.

With a familiar offensive scheme rooted in the same coaching tree, Darnold is poised to take on the starting role for the Vikings in 2024. Adding to the sense of familiarity is the presence of Josh McCown, Darnold’s former Jets teammate, who now serves as Minnesota’s quarterbacks coach.
