Chargers sign Gus Edwards, perfect fit for L.A. backfield

The Los Angeles Chargers have signed free agent running back Gus Edwards in a major move under new head coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz. Edwards, ranked 35th in top free agents, is expected to take over as the team’s featured back. Coming off a career-high season of 810 yards and 13 touchdowns, Edwards brings a strong running game to the Chargers.

In addition to Edwards, the Chargers also agreed to terms with former Seahawks tight end Will Dissly. The signing of Edwards reflects a strong connection with the Chargers’ coaching staff, including Hortiz who worked with Edwards during his time in Baltimore.

The Chargers have emphasized the importance of a reliable running game to support quarterback Justin Herbert. Edwards’ downhill running style and Dissly’s blocking abilities are expected to bolster the Chargers’ offense. The team is focused on building a solid running back room, with Edwards being a key addition.

Despite Edwards’ age of 29, he brings a relatively low workload to Los Angeles with 729 career touches compared to Ekeler’s 1,430. The Chargers still need to make adjustments to be cap-compliant before the start of the new league year. They have work to do in managing their veteran contracts to accommodate the new signings.

With Edwards on board, the Chargers could look to add another running back in the draft to further strengthen their running game. Edwards’ power and vision make him a valuable asset, especially in a system that prioritizes a strong ground attack. His reunion with former Ravens coach Greg Roman is expected to further enhance his performance with the Chargers.
