Anaheim’s $1.9 billion Disneyland expansion plan gains momentum

Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, has reached a significant milestone in its extensive plan to transform and expand. After a lengthy six-hour meeting, the Anaheim Planning Commission voted 5-1 to advance the Disneyland Forward project to the Anaheim City Council for final approval.

If the city council gives the green light to the new zoning changes, Disneyland Forward could bring about a monumental transformation for the resort. This ambitious project aims to introduce new immersive lands and experiences inspired by international Disney Parks to Anaheim.

While specific attractions have not been disclosed, potential additions could include immersive Frozen and Zootopia experiences similar to those in Disney parks in China and Japan. The project is estimated to create around 9,000 jobs during construction and over 4,500 jobs once operational.

The Anaheim City Council is scheduled to vote on the project in April, following discussions between Governor Gavin Newsom and Disney executives in June 2023. A study conducted by Cal State Fullerton highlighted the economic benefits of the Disneyland Resort expansion, projecting an annual economic output of over $250 million and $15 million in tax revenue for the City of Anaheim.

This marks the first time since the 1990s that the City of Anaheim has approved expansion plans for the Disneyland Resort. The future looks bright for this iconic destination as it continues to evolve and grow.
