Powerball: US man sues lottery after being told $340m win is error - BBC.com

A man in the US is suing the lottery after being informed that his $340 million Powerball win was a mistake

A Washington DC man believed he had won a $340m (£270m) jackpot, but after presenting his ticket to the Office of Lottery and Gaming (OLG), his claim was denied. John Cheeks is now suing Powerball and the DC Lottery for damages, claiming that his winning numbers were published by mistake. He is seeking the full amount of the Powerball jackpot, plus interest. According to court documents, the confusion arose from a technical error, with the lottery contractor, Taoti Enterprises, claiming that a set of test Powerball numbers matching Mr. Cheeks’ numbers was accidentally posted on the website. Mr. Cheeks’ lawyer, Richard Evans, is arguing that because the winning numbers matched his client’s, he is entitled to the entire jackpot. Mr. Cheeks expressed hope that the justice system will prevail, as the lottery winnings would have been life-changing for him and his family. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for 23 February. The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are exceedingly rare, about one in 292.2 million. If Mr. Cheeks wins the lawsuit, he plans to open a home trust bank to assist aspiring home owners.
