Greco-Roman-Inspired Sci-Fi Metroidvania 'Somber Echoes' Revealed - IGN

New sci-fi Metroidvania game ‘Somber Echoes’ draws inspiration from Greco-Roman culture

Somber Echoes is a futuristic sci-fi Metroidvania game set aboard the Greco-Roman spaceship Atromitos, 3000 years in the future. The game, developed by Rock Pocket Games and Lav Games and published by Bonus Stage, is described as a “love letter” to the genre. The spaceship is now overrun by creatures from another dimension, creating a haunting atmosphere for players to explore. Featuring seven unique districts and powered by Unreal Engine 5, Somber Echoes offers a visually stunning experience for players.

Unlike traditional retro-style Metroidvanias, Somber Echoes presents its world in 2.5D graphics, giving it a modern twist. The game draws inspiration from Greek tragedy, adding a unique storytelling element to the gameplay. Players take on the role of Adrestia, a survivor of the cataclysmic event that transformed the once majestic Atromitos into a nightmarish environment. Adrestia must stop her twin sister Harmonia from causing further chaos and unraveling the fabric of the universe.

As players navigate the vast spaceship, they will uncover hidden powers, knowledge, and skills that will aid them in their quest to save their destiny. The game promises a rich narrative experience, blending exploration, combat, and puzzle-solving elements. Somber Echoes is set to release on PC in the Fall, offering players a fresh take on the Metroidvania genre.
