Expect Satellite SOS on Pixel phones sooner than expected!

A new feature called “Satellite SOS” has been discovered in Google’s Safety & Emergency settings. While satellite messaging and phone calls are not new, Apple popularized it with its “Emergency SOS” feature on the iPhone 14 in 2022. Two years later, Google appears to be preparing to launch a similar feature on its Pixel phones. The settings page reveals the “Satellite SOS” feature, but it is not functional yet.

The “Satellite SOS” feature is visible on some Pixel devices within the “Safety & Emergency” settings, but tapping on it does not lead anywhere at the moment. According to information from the Google News Telegram channel, this feature may be activated through an update to the ‘Adaptive Connectivity Services.’ Satellite SOS will be useful in situations where there is no Wi-Fi or mobile connection, allowing users to call or text emergency services. Users will need to answer a series of questions about their situation, which will then be sent automatically to emergency services along with key information such as name, email, phone number, and phone’s IMEI.

It is unclear which Pixel phones will support this feature, and it may only be available on future models like the Google Pixel 9. However, there is a possibility that it could be enabled on current models if they have the necessary hardware. Having satellite connectivity on smartphones can be very valuable in emergency situations, especially in remote locations. This feature could make Pixel phones even more useful for users who enjoy outdoor activities like hiking.
