Michigan strength coach departs after reaching settlement

The longtime strength and conditioning coach for the Michigan basketball team, Jon Sanderson, has officially left the university after 15 years. The university confirmed his departure in a statement, expressing gratitude for his contributions. Sanderson’s exit came after a settlement with the university, which included a non-disclosure clause.

Sanderson’s departure followed a confrontation with head coach Juwan Howard on December 7, resulting in Sanderson no longer working with the men’s basketball program. Sanderson had been working with the school’s Olympic sports teams for the past 12 weeks. The disagreement between an athletic trainer and senior guard Jace Howard, Juwan’s son, led to the confrontation.

In an email to the athletic director, Sanderson described the incident, stating that Jace Howard was disrespectful towards the trainer, causing a scene. Sanderson intervened, leading to Juwan Howard coming after him in an aggressive manner. The university conducted a review of the incident, clearing Howard of any wrongdoing.

Sanderson, who joined Michigan in 2009, has been a key figure in the program, working with numerous NBA Draft picks. Mike Favre has replaced Sanderson on the bench since December. Sanderson, a well-regarded strength coach in college basketball, is likely to be sought after by other programs. His son, a promising basketball player, holds scholarship offers from several high-major programs.

Howard, who was placed on a zero-tolerance policy following a postgame altercation, has faced challenges this season with Michigan’s performance. Despite previous successes, the team has struggled this season. Howard’s contract runs through the 2025-26 season.

In conclusion, Sanderson’s departure marks the end of a significant chapter in Michigan basketball, while Howard faces challenges in leading the team through a tough season.
