Kerr’s trial for racially aggravated harassment set for next year

A 30-year-old Chelsea and Australia striker, Sam Kerr, is facing charges of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer under Section 4A of the Public Order Act. The incident occurred on January 30, 2023, in Twickenham. Kerr pleaded not guilty and is set to appear in court on February 3, 2025, for a trial that is expected to last between four and five days.

Kerr, who is currently sidelined due to an ACL injury, has been with Chelsea since 2019 and has scored 99 goals in 128 matches. She has also contributed to four WSL titles, three FA Cups, and two League Cups during her time with the Women’s Super League side. Kerr represented Australia in the Women’s World Cup last summer, making a comeback during the knockout stage after initially being sidelined due to injury.

Football Australia CEO James Johnson commented on the serious nature of the allegations, emphasizing that there is no place for racism in sports. National team coach Tony Gustavsson refrained from commenting on Kerr’s position as captain, stating that his interactions with her have been positive. Chelsea has been contacted for comment on the matter.
