2024 Oscars show need for more diversity with Best Actress winner

The 2024 Oscars saw a repeat of having five past winners present the acting categories, which was well-received. However, the lack of diversity in the Best Actress category raised concerns. With only two women of color ever winning the award in the Oscars’ history, the potential all-white lineup of presenters could send the wrong message. The loss of Lily Gladstone, the first Native American nominated for Best Actress, to Emma Stone highlighted the ongoing diversity issues in the industry.

While opinions on Oscar winners are subjective and based on peer voting, the lack of representation for certain groups is a valid concern. The limited opportunities for Native American actresses in the industry further emphasize the need for more diverse representation. Despite some diversity in this year’s winners, particularly in nationality, the Oscars still have a long way to go in terms of inclusivity.

The 96th Oscars did see some historic wins, such as Japan’s success in categories like Best Animated Feature and Best Visual Effects. Additionally, Ukraine and Ireland celebrated their first Oscar wins, showcasing a global diversity among the winners. However, the overall diversity standards at the Oscars still have room for improvement, especially in areas like gender parity and representation of marginalized communities.
