Apple is gearing up for its largest mid-cycle update for the iPhone yet, set to roll out soon with significant upgrades for all users. The highlight of this update is a major security boost to iMessage. However, the most significant changes are in store for iPhone users in the EU, in response to the Digital Markets Act. Apple recently shed light on what these alterations entail and how they could impact all users, especially if the U.S. or U.K. governments decide to implement similar legislation.
The forthcoming Apple iOS 17.4 update is expected to revolutionize the iPhone experience. The modifications for EU iPhone users are extensive. Apple is mandated to open up its iOS system to allow app sideloading in alternative marketplaces, permit non-WebKit-based web browsers, and enable additional payment mechanisms beyond Apple Pay.
A newly released 32-page white paper by Apple elaborates on these changes. While Apple has implemented several measures to safeguard user privacy and security, it acknowledges that the level of protection may not be as robust as before. The white paper states, “To comply with the DMA, we have introduced new options for developers and users, including enabling sideloading, alternative payment processing on the App Store, and various other changes. This necessitated a shift in our approach to ensure user security and privacy, potentially exposing users to increased risks.”
Some entities, such as banks, have expressed apprehensions to Apple, indicating their preference to remain solely on the App Store and potentially restricting access to devices with sideloaded apps. Apple currently lacks the capability to differentiate between devices with apps sourced from external marketplaces and those with App Store-only apps.
Apple is cautious about potential threats like predatory payment methods, mobile ransomware, and consumer spyware targeting iPhones due to perceived vulnerabilities. The white paper underscores, “In practice, users in the EU will lose the choice to exclusively rely on the App Store and its security features, even if they desire to do so.”
While users can opt to stick to the App Store, Safari, and Apple Pay, some may wish to explore apps from alternative sources. Apple is concerned about the lack of control over external content, stating, “This implies Apple won’t be able to prevent unauthorized apps from being available on alternative marketplaces, potentially exposing users to inappropriate content.”
Spotify has criticized Apple’s white paper, accusing the tech giant of fear-mongering around privacy and security concerns. The impact of these changes on iPhone users remains to be seen but could unfold over the coming weeks.
